And, I don’t think I’ll ever have the words to really express how thankful I am to Julie Murphy for creating Waylon “Pumpkin” Brewer and I am so happy for all the fat queer youth who will get to have this story when it will resonate with them the most! My teenage self cannot even fathom that a book like this could exist (and even if it did my small town library wouldn’t have carried it, trust me). I am so thankful to be alive in a time when there are so many books that are featuring fat people as main characters, especially when they are queer and fat at the same time. ![]() However, when he gets nominated for Prom Queen, after a video of his audition for a popular drag competition show gets leaked, he will have to decide if he’s done hiding in the shadows or if it’s time for him to take his place in the spotlight. I didn’t really need to keep revisiting some of the characters whose actions weren’t directly impacting the plot especially after the story appeared to be resolved. Howard chose to share perspective and storylines from almost all the characters which made the story feel as if it dragged on just a little too long. Stain is over 530 pages long and, if I’m being honest, it really didn’t need to be more than 400 pages. The second thing that needs to be acknowledged is that this book is long…really long….too long. The first thing that needs to be acknowledge about this book is that it is really well written, based on the technique and tone this is one of the best book of the last few years. Lyra becomes Stain an orphan girl who will learn how strong she really is and what battles she is able to fight.
